Year 3/4 Term 3-Push/Pull Projects

For this project, the Year 3/4 students linked  knowledge learnt in their Science Inquiry -investigating and experimenting with the forces of push and pull, and applied it to an art/technology project that used one or both of these forces.

They could choose from six different tasks- 1. a swing in a shoe box; 2. a marble run; 3. a kite; 4. a balloon rocket car; 5; a noodle rocket launcher; or 6. a rope climber.

All tasks involved designing, choosing suitable materials, constructing, testing, evaluating, refining designs and explaining how the force of push, pull or both were used by their object.

Year 5/6 Term 3-Magnificent Masks

This Year 5/6 Art Project made links with the Olympic host country of South America, as well as the many countries and cultures brought together by this great sporting event. We looked at the history of masks and discussed reasons why people might wear masks, ranging from celebrations such as the Rio Carnivale; cultural ceremonies or rituals; and to disguise, change identity or portray characters, such as at masquerade balls or in theatre productions. We viewed many different types of masks from around the world, looking for things they had in common; differences; how line, pattern, colour and other materials (natural or man-made) were used to decorate them;and we discussed what they might have been used for or made from. The students then used these visual images and models as inspiration to create their own type of mask from a choice of materials, including large palm fronds, paper pulp, plaster, cardboard, paint, feathers and sequins.

Year 1/2-Sport Models & Dioramas

For their third term Inquiry, the Year 1/2 students were looking at the history of sport and the Olympic Games. During art sessions, we linked into this theme by making models of a sport person and creating an appropriate scene/diorama to place them in. The students were involved in making paper clay, by tearing up scrap paper and egg cartons, soaking it in water until in was mushy, then pulping it in a blender. Excess water was then squeezed out, PVA glue added, and then it was mixed well to make a smooth paper clay which was  easily molded into shape and painted when dry. The students learnt how to make an armature of a person from pipe cleaners and cover it in foil as a base, before using the paper clay to form their sport model. They were also given the option of using bubble-wrap and masking tape to build up their model over their armature, as an alternative way of making their person. These were then painted in appropriate sporting attire and boxes, paint and collage materials thoughtfully used to create a diorama for their person.  The results were terrific and the students were fully engaged in the creative process, especially learning how to make and use the paper clay.

Preps-Amazing Community Buildings

The Preps are learning more about their community this term and in art we made links to our prior learning in Term 2, where we looked at community workers and the types of vehicles they drive. The students used their knowledge and visual images as inspiration to create their own vehicles from a variety of construction materials, which can be viewed in an earlier blog entry if you missed them.

This time, we brainstormed different types or names of buildings in our community, such as a house, school, hospital, vet, library, hotels, and different types of shops etc. The students were given the challenge of constructing their own ‘labelled’community building or shop using a paper bag and collage materials. Firstly, they used rollers to paint a bag in their chosen colours and when dry, stuffed them with scrunched newspaper to form and hold their 3D shape. Various types of paper was then used to cut shapes to attach for the roof, doors, windows etc.and old calendars/magazines/ wrapping paper used to find suitable pictures for their building. They experimented with staplers and different types of glues to determine which was the best to use for certain jobs.

When finished, the Preps set up their own little community and participated in an ‘I Like Your Work’ session to observe, discuss and give positive feedback to their classmates on the wonderful effort put into their art work. Well done Preps!!!
